She won prizes in the Eisteadford Competitions at the Sydney Opera House, the Ennio Bolognini Cometition, the Silver State Competition, and the Dan Stover Rotary Competitions, and the “Young Artists” Competition of MTNA, as well as the James K. A Southern California native, Benjamin Makino holds degrees from Chapman University and the University of California, Los Angeles. Following his university studies, Makino continued his training at the prestigious Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena, Italy under the instruction of Maestro Gianluigi Gelmetti. In 2006 Makino was selected by Maestro Plácido Domingo to participate as the Young Artist Conductor in the Domingo-Cafritz Young Artist Program at the Washington National Opera, a post he held for two seasons. He was the only U.S. citizen selected from nearly two hundred international candidates for the fiftieth Besançon International Competition for Young Conductors in 2007, and in 2008 he was the recipient of a scholarship from the Italian Cultural Institute of Washington, D.C. for study in Naples, Italy.
